ladakh is an arid, high-altitude region which lies in the indian himalayas. because of its location, ladakh could preserve its unique culture until today. here, travelers experience an astonishing landscape: the small green stripe of the indus valley is surrounded by high mountains with sometimes bizarre rock formations. above this scenery there is, as far as the eye can see, only the sky. with an average altitude of almost 4’000 m, ladakh is one of the highest populated settlements of the world. the villages form a green oasis in the arid high-altitude mountain desert. the local inhabitants are growing apricots, apples, walnuts, different kinds of vegetables, mustard, wheat and barley in their gardens or on the fertile fields. the locals, the ladakhis, are mostly buddhists and their religion is omnipresent: gompas (monasteries) or stupas (feretories) can be seen everywhere and colorful prayer flags cheerfully flutter in the wind. |
